Eka |

My first boat was a GKSS eka, an oldish open clinker-built wooden 14 ft. junior boat from the west coast of Sweden. I bought the boat well used in the ' 70s while working in Stockholm during my student years (a boss with sailing bug infected me - hello to you, Arne !). We sailed the eka with my brother some weeks in the islands there, and then a couple of summers on an inland lake at Tampere. The boat was old, some boards soft, the cotton sails baggy, the pair of oars taken into use on many windless moments, but the overall impression was: sailing is fun !
Marriage, job, and military duties forced us to separate ways. But the bug remained..
Göteborgs Eka is still used for sailing in Nordic countries. It also makes a nice summer cottage boat. Every now and then, a new one is being built when somebody wants to sharpen his/her skills as builder of a wooden boat. |
